Apple iPad Pro 12.9in (Apple M1, 2021) review: Falls just short of greatness - Click to buy

Apple iPad Pro 12.9in

Over the past few years, the iPad Pro has slowly matured into quite the powerhouse, but it’s taken a giant leap forward in 2021. Adopting the much-lauded Apple M1 processor – the same chip found inside this year’s 24in iMac, Mac mini, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air – it has finally drawn level with its more “serious” counterparts when it comes to raw power.

The M1 chip isn’t the only big upgrade for the 2021 iPad Pro, either, despite the fact that it looks pretty much identical to the previous model. Next on the list of upgrades is the new “Liquid Retina XDR” display, which employs Mini-LED technology to boost its HDR capabilities, improving the visuals without the cost to peak brightness and battery life that OLED often brings with it. It’s also available in the same two sizes as before – 12.9in and 11in – although take note: the smaller iPad Pro does not come with the revolutionary Mini-LED display.

Coupled with the advances that Apple has made to iPadOS, the latest iPad Pro more closely resembles a full-blown laptop alternative than it ever has before.

Apple iPad Pro 12.9in (Apple M1, 2021) review: Design - Click to buy

Despite all of the upgrades, the physical design of the new iPad is no different from last year’s model. It’s still available in Space Grey or Silver, measures 5.9mm thick and weighs 682g – or 1.4kg with the Magic Keyboard attached to it. For reference, the smaller 11in model weighs 468g for the tablet and 1.1kg with the Magic Keyboard.

You have a pair of cameras on the rear in the corner, in a square, raised housing like the one on Apple’s iPhone 12 range of smartphones. Beside it is the tablet’s LiDAR scanner, which is used to measure objects with the iOS Measure app and by some apps that use AR (augmented reality).

Also on the rear are three metal contacts for all-but-essential keyboard attachment, while around the edges you’ll find a single Thunderbolt 3 port, the volume and power buttons (in the upper left corner if you have the tablet in landscape orientation) plus four speaker grilles for the iPad Pro’s quad speaker array. The audio output of the iPad Pro’s speakers, incidentally, remains among the best we’ve heard on any device.

Apple iPad Pro 12.9in (Apple M1, 2021) review: Display -Click to buy

There are no such caveats with the new “Liquid Retina XDR display”, which is quite frankly bonkers. It measures 12.9in across the diagonal and has a resolution of 2,732 x 2,048, the same as last year, but this time it uses Mini-LED technology. It’s similar to the IPS LED screen in last year’s iPad Pro but with many more of those LEDs in the backlight. The result is blindingly bright highlights and inky dark black level response.

So why has Apple chosen not to go OLED? We can only assume that battery life and brightness each play a significant part. Most of the OLED displays we’ve seen on laptops have negatively impacted battery life, with the Samsung Galaxy Book Pro’s 1080p OLED screen proving the only exception.

Peak brightness also rarely reaches the same levels as it does with backlit LCD screens. You can compensate for that indoors by drawing the curtains but you can’t do that when you’re out and about, and that generally makes OLED displays an inferior choice in bright environments.

The iPad Pro 12.9in’s Mini-LED display strikes the perfect compromise. The contrast ratio isn’t perfect as it is on OLED screens – we were able to observe the black level rising up to 0.17cd/m2 in some circumstances – but combined with a peak brightness of up to 1,600cd/m2 with Dolby Vision HDR material and 1,000cd/m2 at full-screen (that’s genuinely, blindingly bright, by the way) it delivers a contrast ratio that’s very nearly as good. Click to buy

iPhone 13 may launch this year on September 14, pre-orders said to start on September 17

iPhone 13

We know much about the iPhone 13 months before its launch, thanks to the numerous hints around smartphones to date. It was known that Apple would launch the new iPhone lineup in September, but a recent prediction now closes down on the date.

Apple is expected to release the new iPhone 13, likely to be named the iPhone 12 s, on September 24. The release will follow an announcement of the new series on September 14. Pre-order are likely to start on September 17. Click to buy All model i phone

PhoneArena has speculated the dates based on predictions by Wedbush analyst Dan Ives. Ives shared the assumption in a research note on Monday, stating that Apple might make the new iPhone series announcement in "the third week of September."

As pointed out by PhoneArena, the dates mentioned above fit perfectly with Apple's usual launch schedule of Tuesday-Friday-Friday for the new iPhone series.

Apple has high hopes from the new series and expects it to be the top seller among its smartphone offerings post its launch. So much so that the tech major is projected to produce up to 223 million units of the iPhone 13 series this year. With this, the new series will account for about 39 per cent of Apple's total annual production volume for 2021.

The anticipation of strong sales arises from easing lockdown restrictions in many of Apple's markets as well as Huawei's absence from some of them. It is expected that Apple will launch the iPhone 13 series at the same price as the iPhone 12 models launched last year.

Speculations to date suggest that Apple will launch four iPhone models - iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The devices will feature Apple's A15 5nm+ chipset, upgraded camera setups and smaller notches at the front. All the variants might don AMOLED panels, with a 120Hz refresh rate also expected on the Pro models. The memory options are likely to be limited to 512GB as last year's offerings.

With the launch date and much of the specifications of the iPhone 13 series known, there is little left to speculate about the upcoming Apple devices. The only thing left to see is how many of these speculations come true when Apple finally launches the iPhone 13.Click to buy All model i phone

Apple iPhone 13: Everything We Know So Far

Apple’s iPhone 13 range is ‘ahead of schedule’ with a much earlier release set to surprise (and delight) iPhone fans. And now exclusive new leaks have revealed a lot more about Apple’s exciting new smartphones.

Apple's iPhone 13 range based on leaks from multiple sources

Apple iPhone 13 Potential Price Drops Click to buy All model i phone

First up is CNet, which explains that “Apple may lower the price of the iPhone 13” following market pressure from rivals, notably Samsung which dropped Galaxy S21 prices by $200 compared to its predecessors.

In my opinion, Apple’s record iPhone 12 sales make this unlikely. That said, there is no doubt CNet is correct in pointing out the price squeeze and it is possible Apple will need to be proactive in its response with the iPhone 13 range.

Seven New iPhones, One Mystery

Building on this, French site Consomac has spotted that Apple has submitted seven new iPhone 13 model numbers to the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) database, an official regulatory body. The mystery here is Apple typically submits US and international model numbers for its devices and with four new iPhones coming (iPhone 13, 13 Mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max), one is missing.

Whether this means one iPhone model (possibly the iPhone 13 Mini after poor sales of the iPhone 12 mini) will not be getting as wide an international release, remains to be seen.

Unbox Therapy
Massive iPhone Storage Upgrades

Also turning heads are new leaks that Apple will double iPhone 13 Pro storage to 1TB, which should have a positive knock-on effect to storage options down the range. If the report is correct, iPhone 13 Pro models could well sell in 128GB, 512GB / 1TB options which creates strong upsell potential at each price point.

iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini models, however, are expected to retain the same 64/128/256GB storage options.

Significant Battery Gains

Last, recent leaks claim that Apple will give the iPhone 13 range a big battery boost over its predecessors. The iPhone 13 Pro Max is set to lead the way with an 18% gain to 4,352 mAh - the largest battery ever fitted into an iPhone - with 8% and 10% capacity gains for the iPhone 13/iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Mini, respectively.

Combine these latest leaks with what we already know: the new iPhone 13 design (thanks to leaked schematics) with a shrunken notch, genuinely eye-opening supersized rear cameras (with upgraded image stabilization and clever beamforming mics), the hyper-efficient A15 chipset, new 120Hz ProMotion displays (for iPhone 13 Pro models) and even talk of a pink edition and Apple looks set for another bumper iPhone year. Click to buy All model i phone

Redmi Note smartphones to get 100W fast charging

redmi

Chinese manufacturing giant, Xiaomi, is quite good with charging technology. The company currently has up to 120W of wired fast charging and 50W of wireless fast charging. However, for now, the maximum charging power on its Redmi smartphones is 67W. According to popular Weibo leakster, @DCS, after the 67W fast charge, Xiaomi will continue to decentralize the 100W fast charge solution to the Redmi Note series of mobile phones. The Redmi Note 10 Pro is Redmi’s latest smartphone. This device was officially released last month and it is the first Redmi Note series that support a 67W fast charging technology. In addition to supporting 67W fast charging, the phone also comes with Dimensity 1100 chip as well as a 5000 mAh battery. Furthermore, this device adopts a flagship VC liquid cooling technology. In addition, among Xiaomi’s mass-produced mobile phones, the fastest charging speed is the Black Shark 4 Pro’s 120W. A recent announcement from Xiaomi shows that the Mi 11 Pro can use 200W wired and 120W wireless charging. Click to buy

According to reports, the 200W wired can charge 100% (4000mAh) in 8 minutes. It can also achieve 10% in 44 seconds, and 50% in 3 minutes. This is the first time that wired charging is entering the ten-minute full charge timeline. The 120W wireless can charge 100% (4000 mAh) in 15 minutes. Also, this is the first time that wireless charging is breaking the 100W mark. Wireless charging may be regulated
According to reports, there is a plan in China to regulate wireless charging capacity. According to a report, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the “Interim Provisions on the Radio Management of Wireless Charging (Power Transmission) Equipment (Draft for Comment)”. This preliminary document lists some guidelines for the production and power transmission of wireless chargers. The document states that if a wireless charger must sell in China, its charging capacity will not exceed 50W. Obviously, 120W far exceeds the requirements in the “Draft for Comments” and may be suspended by supervision in the future.

High wireless charging could be harmful - Click to buy
According to reports, if the wireless charging power is too high, it may cause safety hazards to some sectors. The documents list aviation, shipping, astronomical observation, and other areas that high wireless charging may affect. There are reports that the 120W fast charging is not sustainable. This means that during charging, the peak power could hit 120W at some point. However, it will not be able to sustain charging at 120W for a long time.

Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro: Everything we know so far

Google Pixel

Google Pixel 6 is hot in the rumor mill with multiple leaks presenting a deeper peek into the upcoming Google smartphone. It is also speculated that the Pixel 6 will be accompanied by the bigger Pixel 6 Pro phone. It is highly likely, the Pixel Fold and even an XL model may debut alongside the Pixel 6 series smartphones. The last year’s legitimate leak suggested three code-named devices – Passport, Raven and Oriole – now believed to be the trio of these Pixel phones, set to release this year.

The expectation from the Pixel 6 series are high as improvements over the Pixel 5 are a given. How much better will they actually be, remains to be seen. Before the phones are launched, here’s a definitive preview of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Buy Google pixel 5 5G 128GB Click to buy

Design and display

A smartphone’s design in the current generation needs to be eye-catchy and it should have the aesthetic to garner buyer’s attention. Google seems to have hit the right note, as leaks suggest a radically different look for the Pixel 6. Going by Jon Prosser’s leaked renders and the ones by OnLeaks, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro have a funky back panel with a tertiary accent colored bar running along the top section, just over the camera array.

Another video by Concept Creator shows a 3D Printed (PLA printed) version of the Pixel 6. How it looks and feels in the real world while being compared to the Samsung Galaxy S21 is another indication of what the phones will be like.

As it is clear from the OnLeaks renders, the Pixel series will feature an AMOLED display. Pixel 6 will support the 1080p 6.4-inch screen with flat edges while the Pro version could have a QHD+ 6.7-inch curved screen. Interestingly, both will feature an under-display fingerprint scanner, ditching the rear scanner for good. According to Leaker Max Weinbach, both the devices will support 120Hz refresh rate screens, which potential buyers will absolutely love.

Camera module

The Pixel phones are been known to have stellar camera performance, and the Pixel 6 should follow suit. If we go by a leak, the Pixel 6 will have dual rear camera setup while the Pro might come with a triple-camera module. According to OnLeaks, the bigger Pro version will have a telephoto camera and ultra-wide lens alongside the main sensor. Rumor also suggests the presence of a 50MP main sensor on the Pro model, along with an 8MP periscope telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom.

Taking the rumor jargon further, Patently Apple even suggests the presence of an under-display camera on the front. But the renders by Onleaks and Jon Prosser clearly deny that speculation – as the phone seems to have a center-aligned selfie shooter. One thing is for certain, the Pixel 6 phones will have even better image reproduction and post-processing capabilities. This fact is confirmed by Google, who said they are working with image experts to capture accurate photos with real-life color representation on future devices. Buy Google pixel 5 5G 128GB Click to buy

Processing power and battery

Speculations are strong about Google using its own chipset codenamed ‘Whitechapel’ for upcoming devices. As per a recent report by 9to5Google, the chipset is ready to be used on future devices by Google. The most likely devices to get the in-house chipset seems to be the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro. According to Weinbach, the chipset performance will be somewhere between the Snapdragon 888 and the last year’s flagship Snapdragon 865.

The advantage here for Google will be the ability to incorporate its own neural processor unit and the image signal processor. This gives the freedom to fine-tune the AI functions; ones like the computational photography chops. Certainly, there are risks with using your own developed chipset, but if Google wants to play it safe, the next best option would ideally be the Snapdragon 780 5G.

The battery is going to be another important talking point for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Pixel 5 didn’t impress much in the battery department, and Google will be looking to set that right with the Pixel 6 series. Increasing the refresh rate for the screen demands a bigger battery, and the Pixel Pro at least could get the 5,000mAh battery. Rumors also support that fact as well as the presence of a 4,500mAh battery on the smaller Pixel 6.

One recent leak also suggests the devices have fast charging capability courtesy the newly developed Google Pixel Stand. This new accessory has a faster charging tech and built-in fans to keep the phone cool at all times. OnLeaks suggests, the Pixel 6 series will get wireless charging which is a good sign. Whether the phones will get the bundled charging brick is anybody’s guess, since Apple and then later Samsung ditched it for their flagship devices.

Release date and price

Now comes the most exciting bit, when will the phones be launched and for what price point? If we go by Google’s past release cycle, October seems to be their month of choice for new releases. Pixel 5 was an exception last year – it released in September – but then the pandemic was to blame. This year we strongly believe an October release is imminent for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The only roadblock could be the chip shortage which might push the launch ahead.

Pricing of the Pixel series phones will get interesting as Google is likely to have better hardware but will want to stick with a competitive price point to keep buyers honest. Don’t expect the price to be lower than the Pixel 5 for sure, but a similar price tag could be the way to go.

Pixel 6 wrap-up

To compete in the current premium smartphone race, Pixel 6 and the Pixel Pro will certainly need to come with worthy upgrades. A design overhaul is much needed, and the device renders suggested by trusted leaksters are comforting. Battery life and performance is another area where Google will certainly make the necessary escalation.

We expect the Pixel 6 to be something surprising after a long host of predictable releases by Google in the past few years. Whether it will be able to challenge the likes of the Galaxy S series or the iPhone – will be an interesting development to keep an eye on. It won’t be surprising if both the Pixel 6 and Pixel Pro see a delay in launch, given the current global conditions, but anyways, looking forward to it. Buy Google pixel 5 5G 128GB Click to buy

Ratchet and Clank-Rift Apart Pixelizer HD uses PS5 controller haptics to make music

Buy Now

A Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart weapon utilizes the DualSense haptics to make music.

As revealed by Insomniac Games, one of the many weapons in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart makes use of the PS5 controller by making music with the haptics. As shown in the video, when the player holds down the adaptive trigger to charge up the Pixelizer HD weapon, the vibration that players feel can actually be turned into music by placing the controller on a surface.

By using different patterns and frequencies and other forms of technological wizardry, the haptics generate tones that turn into music. Of course, this is accompanied by music that also plays through the PS5 controller's built-in speakers to add extra immersion.

Insomniac making players aware of this has seen a number of users wondering if there's a meaning behind the song, whether it's an easter egg for something or a throwback to a previous game in the series. At the moment, it's only known as the cool Pixelizer HD song. Click to buy

To get access to the Pixelizer weapon, you'll have to have progressed in the game to get to Ms. Zurkon where you can purchase the weapon from the store. From there you'll have to upgrade it to reach the highest available upgrade level. It's also unclear if this requires the user to have the game's vibration settings set to Experimental or Functional.

While this is a cool feature for Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, this isn't the first game to make use of haptics to create music. Kirby Star Allies is one notable example that uses the Switch controller's HD Rumble to play a tune from the game. Those who hooked the PS5 controller to a PC were also able to make the haptics work with music from Doom and even Spotify. However, this could be the first PS5 game to use the haptics in this way intentionally.

The PS5 controller is built to increase immersion in many games with its built-in speaker, haptics, and adaptive triggers. It is also capable of creating vibrations from sound effects "almost automatically" and for the upcoming Horizon Forbidden West, the haptics will be used in stealth.  Click to buy

The Best Smartphones Under Rs. 10,000 You Can Buy In India

We recently reviewed the Realme C25, priced just under Rs. 10,000, as the successor to the Realme C15. While the upgraded SoC in the C25 does deliver better performance compared to the C15, the rest of the phone is still not good enough to make it worth your while, in our opinion. Other than this, there haven't been any major changes to the sub-Rs. 10,000 segment. Motorola's Moto G10 Power joined the ranks a month ago of other good offerings from Xiaomi and Realme.

Our list also contains a few special mentions for those of you who are flexible with your budget. These special mentions are slightly more expensive but well worth the premium they command. Here are the best smartphones in India under Rs. 10,000 in no particular order.

Best phones under 10,000 Phones under Rs. 10,000 Gadgets 360 rating (out of 10) Price in India (as recommended) Moto G10 Power 7 Rs. 9,999 Moto E7 Plus 8 Rs. 9,499 Redmi 9 Prime 7 Rs. 9,999 Realme Narzo 30A 8 Rs. 8,499 Realme Narzo 10A 8 Rs. 8,999 Moto G10 Power

Motorola's latest addition to the G series, the G10 Power is priced such that it barely makes it onto this list. The Moto G10 Power sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 SoC and comes in one configuration only. You get 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage and is priced at Rs. 9,999.

The Moto G10 Power sports a 6.5-inch display with a dewdrop notch and packs in a big 6,000mAh battery. It has an IP52 rating for dust and water resistance which is uncommon at this price point. The Moto G10 Power runs Android 11 with a few of Motorola's customizations which deliver a smooth user experience.

You get a quad-camera setup with the Moto G10 Power, comprising of a 48-megapixel primary camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, a 2-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. These cameras performed well in daylight but the low-light performance wasn't the best. You will get good battery life thanks to the bigger battery, and this phone would be a good choice for someone who prioritizes that. The Moto G30 is a viable alternative with a more powerful processor if you are willing to go a little over budget. - Click to buy

Moto E7 Plus

The Moto E7 Plus is another low-cost offering from Motorola. It is priced at Rs. 9,499 and packs in some decent specifications. The Moto E7 Plus is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 processor, paired with 4GB of RAM. It sports a 6.5-inch display with HD+ resolution and a dewdrop notch at the top. The Moto E7 Plus has enough performance to handle day-to-day tasks as well as casual gaming. It has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner that works well.

Motorola offers a 5,000mAh battery but sadly, this phone misses out on a USB Type-C port and instead has a Micro-USB port. Charging is slow as the bundled charger is 10W only. You only get a dual-camera setup with a 48-megapixel main camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The cameras are capable of capturing good photos in daylight. Using Night mode, the Moto E7 Plus also takes some decent low-light shots.

The Moto E7 Plus offers a clean near-stock Android UI which is not very common at this price level. If you like a simple, easy-to-use interface then the Moto E7 Plus has that going for it. The Moto G9 and Moto G10 Power are suitable alternatives.- Click to buy

Redmi 9 Prime

The Redmi 9 Prime is a modified version of the Redmi 9 with a higher resolution full-HD+ display. While most smartphones on this list have an HD+ display, the Redmi 9 Prime has a 6.53-inch display with a dewdrop notch at the top.

The Redmi 9 Prime also has the relatively powerful MediaTek Helio G80 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and you get 64GB or 128GB of storage, though only the 64GB option is within this budget. The Redmi 9 Prime runs MIUI 11 on top of Android 10 and comes with a fair amount of bloatware preinstalled.

The Redmi 9 Prime has a quad-camera setup consisting of a 13-megapixel primary camera, an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 5-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The camera performance is average overall. You will get good battery life thanks to a 5,020mAh battery, but the supplied 10W charger is rather slow. If you are fine with spending a little extra, the Redmi 9 Power will appeal to you with its stereo speakers and battery life.

Realme Narzo 30A

The Narzo 30A was launched in early 2021 and is the latest in the Narzo series from Realme. The phone is priced at Rs. 8,999 and offers good value. It has a fresh design with a square-shaped camera module as well as a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The display size is generous at 6.5 inches but it only has an HD+ resolution.

The Narzo 30A is powered by the MediaTek Helio G85 SoC and is available in two variants. The base variant has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage while the higher variant offers 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. This phone runs Realme UI on top of Android 10.

You get a dual-camera setup on the Narzo 30A which delivers decent photos in daylight, but low-light camera performance is below average. If you like taking a lot of selfies, the Realme Narzo 30A will keep you happy. The big battery also helps deliver excellent battery life but it comes at the cost of the device being slightly big and bulky.Click to buy

Realme Narzo 10A

The Realme Narzo 10A is slightly older now but still offers good value. It sports a 6.5-inch display with HD+ resolution and is powered by the MediaTek Helio G70 SoC. There are two variants of the Narzo 10A, one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage priced at Rs. 8,999, and the other with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage which costs Rs. 9,999.
